Audit Methodology & Data Sources

Our retirement inflation audit uses publicly available economic data from authoritative U.S. government and industry sources. This page details our data sources, calculation methodology, and the assumptions underlying our projections.

Primary Data Sources

BLS

Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)

The BLS Consumer Price Index (CPI) is our primary source for historical and current inflation data. We use CPI-U (All Urban Consumers) as the baseline measure of inflation.

FRED

Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED)

FRED, maintained by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, provides supplementary economic indicators including historical interest rates, monetary supply data, and alternative inflation measures.

WGC

World Gold Council

For educational content regarding precious metals as an asset class, we reference research and data from the World Gold Council, a market development organization for the gold industry.

Calculation Methodology

Purchasing Power Erosion Formula

Future Value = Present Value × (1 - Inflation Rate)Years

This formula calculates the real purchasing power of your savings after accounting for cumulative inflation over your specified time horizon. The result shows what your current savings will be worth in today's dollars at retirement.

Inflation Scenarios

1

Historical Average (~3%)

Based on the 100-year average of U.S. CPI inflation from BLS data.

2

Elevated/Stress Test (~5-7%)

Reflects periods of higher inflation (1970s, 2021-2023) to stress-test your portfolio.

3

Alternative Measures (~7%+)

Some economists argue official CPI understates true inflation. Alternative metrics (using pre-1990 CPI methodology) suggest higher real-world erosion, particularly in essentials like healthcare, housing, and food.

Asset Return Assumptions

For comparative analysis, we use the following historical average annual returns (nominal, pre-tax) based on long-term market data:

U.S. Stocks (S&P 500)~10%

Source: FRED / NYU Stern

U.S. Bonds (10-Year Treasury)~5%

Source: FRED

Cash / Money Market~2%

Source: FRED

Gold~7%

Source: World Gold Council
